check for some skate-able street spots like ledges or stairs around your hometown or check the local skatepark.

making cement obstacles is pretty easy and fun! Many microwave or prepacked food trays when filled with concrete make great ledges, pads etc. You can also carve bits of polystyrene to shape and coat that in concrete, with a trowel (or a spoon if you don't have a trowel).

making wooden obstacles usually involves a bit more hard work and more tools, but you can use a good quality glue gun for a surprising amount. You do need to be more accurate in terms of measuring a cutting to get a good look though. My first wooden project was some simple pallets, made with a few cubes of 1x1 and some ice-lolly sticks, easy but they look ace!

rails are easy, any hardware store will have sets of cupboard handles many of which make fantastic rails when attached to a secure base.

As for inspiration, don't worry about being hyper-orginal at first. Everyone needs a kicker, for example, and they're all gonna look pretty similar. Just make simple things in your chosen material and when you get proficient ideas will start to emerge naturally.

Also, on the subject of materials, there are loads of places on the net that will send out a decent sized sample pack of marble and stone tiling, for free, which is great for small-ish obstacles (two of them made a table that was the same length as a blackriver picnic bench).

As you might realise from the wall of text, making obstacles is a big part of fingerboarding for me!
